BRITISH RAILWAYS

A SAFETY SYSTEM. mted Press Association^- By Electric T olograph— Oopyright). LONDON, October 22 An interesting development in railway operating:'methods has been announced by the Great Western Railways Cov., which proposes to equip 17(30’miles of track embracing all of its principal main line routes, and 2000 of its engines, with its own system of automatic train control. This system is giving an audible warning to the engine driver of the state oif the signal, and in the event of the danger signal being passed, the system automatically pulls up the train before it reaches the next signal. Work is to begin at once on the further enlargement of tlie Southern Railways’ extension scheme at the Southampton Docks, under which some 350 feet of deep water quays, suitable for the accommodation of vessels of 40 feet draft, together with cranes sheds, railways and all modern accessories, are to be constructed at an estimate cost of £3,000,000. This work will take about five years to complete. The Government have agreed to give financial help under the Development Loans, Guarantees, and Grants Act. The scheme also includes the reclamation of about 200 acres of mud land.
