The death occurred last night, at her residence, Beach Road, of an old nd esteemed resident of Kmnara, Mrs Catherine Whelan. A native of Ounstan, Otago, where she was born iver sixty-six years ago, the late Mrs Whelan had come to the West Coast in her youth, and was for some years a resident of Hokitika, coming later to Kumara, where she had lived ever since. She leaves a husband, Mi Michael Whelan, formerly of the Borough Council staff, and two daughters, Mrs J. Atkinson, of South Beach, and Mrs P. McCarthy, of Kawhaha, in the Auckland district. The are fifteen grandchildren.
The death took place at Cobden on Tuesday of Mr George Gotten McGlashau, aged 75 years, Mr McGlasllaii Was born in Dunedin alid was educated at the Otago Bely’s High School and at the University of Edinburgh. After completing his education lie took up the position of civil engineer with the Government, doing surveying work on the Dunedin to Christchurch and other important railways in Otago. On retiring from the Public Works Department, he took over the Central Otago irrigation contract.' After this work was completed Mr McGlashan took u his residence in Cobden. He leave a widow and three sons, Herbert and Leonard (Greymouth) and Edgar (Havelock).
There should be a bumper house at the Princess Theatre to-night for the Ladies Club gymnastic display assisted by Mr Musson and (party from Christchurch. The young ladies have been put through a rigorous course of training 'by Miss M. Austin, and judging from last night’s dresu rehearsal, will acquit themselves splendidly. The work by Mr Musson and his quartette of young ladies will be specially attractive. The various gymnastic items will be both novel and entertaining, and a treat for patrons. A very attractive musical programme will be supplied between the gymnastic items, and the whole will be a hgihly meritorious performance. The proceeds will he devoted to the fuller establishment of the Ladies’ Club and when their work is seen, the advantage of this worthy purpose will he realised fully. The doors open at 7.30 and the overture will be at 8 o’clock.
