FIREMEN OVERCOME
TRAPPED IN DENSE SMOKE
WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. 'The ten-roomed residence oi H. G. Rutter, Waterloo Road, Lower Hutt, and its contents were destroyed by li.ro early this morning. The lire was discovered in a study, which was entered by Superintendent Shun and Fireman Hutton. They were in difficulties with the and Deputy-Superintendent Doran and Fireman Wilson went to their aid. A strong wind was blowing at the time, and it slammed the study door, leaving the men in the dark amid thick smoke. Doran managed to find the door, but by this time Superintendent Slinn was quite overcome and unconscious. Hutton was little .better off. ■ The sufferers were attended to by a doctor living next door. The city ambulance arrived fourteen minutes after being called for and took Superintendent Slinn and Fireman Hutton to the Wellington Hospital. Superintendent Slinn was badly burned as well as suffering from partial suffocation. Mr Rutter s loss 'is heavy, as he had added considerably to the value of lus property recently without increasing the insurance.
