Discussing the price! of whitebait, a Christchurch retailer said last week that while it was true that there had, a run of the fish on the West, Coast, the samples sent to Christchurch had not been in the best of condition and the demand for the good part of me, supply had been so great that the price had been kept up. He had bought yesterday at 2/6 a pint and had sold at 3/- a pint. Some of the other whitebait could be bought cheap, hut it was not the quality that customers in Christchurch would buy. Usually West Coast whitebait was <;,f good quality, but this year it had been a milky colour, due, to the state .0) the rivers on the Coast. This was cheap whitebait to which reference bad been made, but tile good quality fish, was still high in price. “Tnere; too much competition in our trade now for anyone to exploit the public,!’ he said.—Christchurch “Sun”.
