An outbeak of smallpox at sea is a terrifying thing! Years ago, when the old “Arawa” was en route from Sydney to London, a lady saloon passenger fell sick. Ship’s doctor said “smallpox,” and consternation reigned aboard. The ship was then in the Suez Canal, and the patient was put ashoro at lsmailia. A had case!
