MANIA TO LEARN FLYING

SALESMAN’S THEFT OF CARS

AUCKLAND, October 16

Dominated, so counsel submitted, by his passionate desire to- learn flying, Leslie Philip Sinclair Haynes, a salesman, aged twenty-nine, stole three motor-cars (to a total value of £650) so that he could get to the Mangere Aerodrome for his flying lessons. This morning Haynes appeared in the Police Court. He was alternatively charged with the unlawful conversion of three, cars.

Mr R. A. Singer, who appeared for accused, pleaded guilty to the theft charges. The police then indicated that they would offer no. evidence on the indictable charges.-<• . “He was looking forward to matrimony with a highly respectable girl who had been looking after his money for him,” said Mr Singer. “This is a case of terrible mental aberration. Haynes had not taken the cars for the purpose of joy-riding or .for loose conduct, He had taken, them for the sole purpose of getting to> the aerodrome. He had a mania to learn, flying. Your Worship may suggest that he has down a little too high. Perhaps he has. Out of his savings he was paying for his flying tuition and up to date the lessons had cost him between £4O and £SO. So that lie could get to this rich man’s paradise, the aerodrome, he took these cars and it was his maniacal idea of learning to fly that made him do these things.” Evidence as to the charm ter of the accused was called by Mr Singer, who appealed to the Magistrate to let- the case stand over for a. day or two so that Mr Hunt could get a report from the probation officer. “Pm very much, afraid that if I got a report recommending probation I would not agree with it,” said Dir Hunt.

Haynes was remanded, in (us tody until Saturday morning. Bail was not asked for.
