CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
SYNOD NOT OPPOSED
AUCKLAND, October 18
The Anglican Synod did not approve of a motion affirming the desirability of abolishing capital punishment.
The motion was moved by the Rev. Jasper Calder, City Missioner, who said that since the last execution in New Zealand four murder charges had been laid. That proved that hanging was not a strong deterrent. The debate was remarkable for a speech by the Rev. E. Chi tty, who said: “Ilf 1 lost my temper and killed a man I hope 1 would he prepared to take niy gruel like a man.” He would have ho hesitation in convicting a murderer if convinced of his guilt, and it no one else would execute him lie would. Mr Calder expressed disappointment at the reception of the nVotion and the arrogance and “flippancy” of Mr Cliittv about a terribly Serious matter. Eventually Mr Calder yielded to a suggestion that he should withdraw the motion.
