FIRE FATALITY
SUFFOCATED BY SMOKE. PALMERSTON N'., October 19. Early this morning fire practically destroyed a six-roomed residence in Runtime Street, owned and occupied by Mr William Mitchell, eighty-seven years of age, who perished from suffocation. In the house with deceased were two daughters and a nurse. A daughter sleeping in a back room was awakened by crackling. She got out of bed and awakened her sister, the nurse and her father and all were able to get out of the house. Deceased, who was a cripple, returned to the bedroom, evidently to got papers from a s afc. He was overcome by smoke arid collapsed. The fire had a strong hold when the brigade received the alarm, but they were quickly on the scene. A rescue party went in to find Mitchell, but he was not in the room where the safe was. and until the fire was subdued they could not enter the room in which the unfortunate man was subsequently found.
