FRANCE TAKES GOLD. The latest return of the Bank * f j France (August) shows that the gold j in the vaults of that institution has j reached £376,000,000, remarked the j “Daily Mail” of August 10, and went ! on: “This represents an increase of £4,000,000 since the previous week, and of £16,000,000 since mid-July. Jn the same period of a month the Bank of England gold reserve has fallen 1 y over £2.000,000 to £153,000,000. Why is it that France is getting all this gold? One of the chief reasons is that France lias a scientific tariff and we have not. The French tariff is so adjusted as to restrict imports which would dislodge French workers from employment. Consequently Fiance imports much less than wq- do, and she has practically no unemployed. She has preserved a prosperous agriculture and can feed herself with a little effort. We, on the other hand, have allowed our agriculture to he wrecked by dumping.”
