Not only has the chrampion Avon one of the biggest prizes of the Australian turf, but leaped in one bound over £SOOO past Gloaming’s record stake earnings, and thus secured his position at the head of the list for some considerable time, in spite of Phar Lap’s fast approach,. Either of the minor places Avould also have served to make him. the record holder, as he Avas before the race only £307 behind Gloaming’s mark. Mr G. D. Greemvood, whose home was burned doAvn on Friday, belongs to one .of the oldest Canterbury families, but he is best knoAvn for his oavuership of the famous horse Gloaming. Gloaming AA-as trained by “Dick” Mason at Riccarton, and has been beaten only once in a long racing career, when Thespian beat him at Trenthnm. That, hoAA'ever, Avas not the fault of file horse, for lie Avas caught in the tapes, delayed at the post, and therefore d.d not run in the race. He is the present champion NeAV Zealand as far «..s stakes are concerned, having Avon more, than £44,000. Amounis is about £SOOO above this record.
