SURPRISE IN CANADA
NEW ZEALAND’S NEW TARIFF. VANCOUVER. Sept. 12. The announcement from New Zealand that in future that country would impose general rather than preferential tariff on all Canadian-made automobiles has come as somewhat of a shock to the newly-elected Canadian Government.
At the present time notice has been given that the trade treaty between Canada and New Zealand will be abrogated on October 15. This action was taken by the late Government in radons*? to the widespread discontent in the Canadian agricultural industry, due to the fact that, great, quantities of New Zealand butter were being sold here. But the intention behind the abrogation of the treaty, was merely to have a new and more extensive agreement negotiated. 1° this it was honed that , the treaty might bo confined mainly to manufactured goods. 1 1 It was not considered likelv t!m any definite action regarding the present agreement would be taken pendinrr the negotiations, and the impos tion by New Zealand of the, generel tariff on Canadian cars has changed the situation materially. Ontario, where manufacturers have been hit hardest by the change, o demanding that the whole agreement he wrapped and that a market for Canadian motor oars be found elsewhere. • ~ It is estimated that the loss to the motor oar industry in Ontario alone will total more than 6,000,000 dollars annually.
