FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER

MR TEACHER’S VISIT. BEAUTIES OF WEST COAST.

“When anyone asks me what I think of New Zealand, I’m completly floored. L have never seen anything like it lor majesty and variety,” said Mr R. M. Teacher, a director of William Teacher and Sons., Ltd., whisky distillers, Scotland, on his retain to Christchurch on Thursday from a three days’ visit to the Frann Josef Glacier. Mr Teacher has by now fairly covered the scenic beauties of the Dominion, and none, he would say, compares with the Franz Josef Glacier and the 90-mile drive that approaches it from Hokitika. “We flatter ourselves that we have some good scenery in England, ’ said Mr Teacher “but in variety and majesty we have nothing to touch what I have seen on the West Coast. We were able to drive by car all the way from Otira The bush scenery on the way to the Glacier hostel is the lo 1 -elicsl of its kind I have seen. Mrs Teacher wanted all the while to get out and stock the car up with ferns to take home.. You seem to have great opportunities m New Zealand not only for sight-sceiim but for sports. At Home we do a b’t of grouse-shooting, but if we want skiing or mountain climbing we have to go to Switzerland.”

Mr Teacher, who was delighted with the hospitality of the Graham Brothers, at the Glacier Hostel, spent a whole day on the Frorv? Josef Glacier, mounting up about half a mile to the Pinnacles. Unfortuntely, it was raining on the day of the climb : but although he missed the rkh colourings which the, sun would have given the busli, the .scenery was sufficiently fine without them.
