The County Council has been advised that the Public Works Department to 30th September has spent the following sums in Westland on unemployment work Dorothy Falls road £2,500; Great South Road, Wehokai, £8,6C0; total ■£ll,ooo. The County Council is contributing £4OO to the Public Works Department as an aid to relieve unemployment, the amount being paid at the rate of £IOO . per month.

The death took place last evening at Rpefton of a very early and wellknown Coast pioneer, Mrs Mary Ann Slattery, who at the advanced age of eighty-seven years, passed away a the residence of her daughter, Mrs E Hussey, proprietress of the Railway Hotel, Renton. A native of County Clare, Ireland, she came to the Coast in the very early days, and with her husband, the late John Slattery, who died twenty years ago, she was in the. hotel business at Hokitika, Kumara, and other places before going about forty years ago to Capleston. She was very highly respected by everybody wherever she went being of a most genial and kindly disposition. 'She leaves two sons, Patrick and John, of Wallsend, and three daughters, Mesdames J. Hickey (Wallsend), A. Behan (Greymouth), and E. Hussey (Reefton).
