PRQF. HORNELL’S REPORT.

WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. _ ■Tlie report of the Swedish hydroelectrical engineering export, Professor P, J. Horiiell, on the Arapuni power scheme, was presented in the no.Hje of Representatives this afternoon by the Minister of Public Works, The recommendations for repair operations include the following:— The sealing of the cracks. 1 The water-proofing of the headrace. The providing of a draining system underneath;.
The reinforcing of the ground around the Penstock intake structure. The imposing of a waterproof layer on the rock below the spillway as far as the crest of the falls.
The stopping of certain leaks in the main dam foundations.
The further strengthening of the country adjacent to the' dam. T'he Professor expresses the view that .the works have been designed on sound engineering principles, and that the constructional, work has been well carried out. He has no apprehension about the future'operation of the power house. As he has insufficient knowledge of local conditions and prices, Professor Hornell does not got into the question of costs, Ibut he suggests that the Public. AVorks Department can, make estimates with a fair degree of accuracy. In a statement to the House, Hon. Air Taverner said that an estimate of the cost had been compiled by the Public. AA T orlcs Department at £360,000 for the work recommended by the Professor. To this, of course, must he added the coist of the consolidation of the falls, which .is estimated at £200,000, making a total cf £560,000.
