The funeral of the late Mr George Wi 1 lets took place yesterday afternoon there being a large number of mourners following the cortege from A rah urn to the cemetery. A large number of floral tributes wen 1 received. Hey. G. Knowles Smith conducted the service at the graveside.
Mr J. Ph-ihbs, an enm’oyee of the Railway Department here for sonic years, has left for Greymouth on transfer. Prior to his departure yesterday he was met by fellow members of the staff and presented with a smoker’s outfit- with good wishes for his further advancement in his new sphere, of work. Air Pliihhs, who has been a member of the Municipal Band since his sojourn hero, was also- presented by the Band with ail electric torch, as a token of esteem in which he was held by Band members.
The wedding took place nt the Church of England, Ahaura, on Saturday afternoon, of Rona Lilian, youngest daughter of Mr J. and the late Airs Whitehead, of Atarau, to James, youngest son of Mr and Airs A. AleDonnld, of Blackball. The Rev. G. Barker officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a fawn repp, frock and hat to match. The bridesmaid, Miss Doris Whitehead, wore a frock of pink crepe-de-chine. Mr W. Hogg was bo9t man.
Some alarm was felt for the safety of a man named Peterson one of the workers on the Dorothy Falls track extension work, It appears that he was missing from the camp on Tuesday night and it was feared he may have fallen into the Lake or gone off the track and been bushed. Search parties were out yesterday, Constable Drummond being in charge, but the man turned up safely this morning at 3 o’clock a,bout two miles away from whore he had been missed, lie having been bushed. He was none the worse For his experience.
The Mayor (Air Perry) and several members of the Borough Council spent a couple of hours yesterday afternoon, looking into several drainage matters, as a result of the late flooding from storm waters. Several street drains. North Town Belt, Fitzherbert Street drain, Rolleston Street drain, Livingstone Street drain, and the out fall from overflow creek through the Botanical Gardens reserve, were examined. It is understood various proposals were agreed to as to remedial measures for dealing with the difficult matters, and steps will be taken to have the works attended to as the urgency and funds permit. A. general cleaning up of the watercourses will be <he first stop towards a definite improvement where at all possible.
The wedding took place on Tuesday morning, at the residence of Mrs L. Bradley, Hall Street, Cobden, of Miss Rita Cowan, eldest daughter of Airs and the late Air A. Cowan, of Cobden, to Air David Stevenson, son of Airs and the late Air Andrew Stevensen, of Christchurch, and late of Hokitika. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. R. Fell. The bride wore a dress of blue georgette, wi.th hat to tone. The bridesmaids. Alisses Aloliv Cowan and Alargaret Spiers, wore frocks of champagne celariese and lemon georgette respectively. Aliss Ngaire Harcourt acted as flower giril, and wore a frilled georgette. The bride was given away by her uncle, Air W. R. Hunter. Air R, C. Cowan acted as best man. Air and Airs David Stevenson left by the morning express for Dunedin.
