For the opening of the Caulfield races jto-usiy the weather was fine and bright. -There was a fair attendance, and the going was good. Despite a poor jump at the second last hurdle, Not Infallible won the Emo hurdle race comfortably. He raced consistently, and deserved to
.. Sea Mistress had a narrow win in the Nursery Handicap. This is her second win in two starts. Roadstead and Dunlpra finished well, Sea Mistress was ridden by Ashley Reed, and cost 110 guineas as a yearling. The Caulfield Cup candidate, Second Wind, had an" impressive win in the Power Stakes. This is Trainer Holt’s seventh .success in this race.
Glare put up its best performance in Melbourne to date. Carradale was unlucky in being hampered for want of galloping room. Gay Mutineer was seventh early in the Moonga Handicap, but finished best and won brilliantly. He is engaged in the Caulfield Cup, and is trained by the former New Zealander, Dave Price, whose son, Bert, tiaius Byron. The Caulfield Cup candidate. Shadow King, won the Coongy Handicap comfortably. This is his first win in eleven months. His time is a record. Waieullus pulled up lame, and is an unlikely runner in the Cup. Soulton failed after hating every chance. Pinnacle was well placed all the way, and won the first, division of the Welter nicely. .He was successful in the sariie event two years ago.
The Tasmania-owned and trained Darpuna had a runaway victory in the second division of the Welter. He was bred at Bonny Vale. Results:— Emo Hurdles Not Infallible, 10.10 1; Plunderer 10.12, 2; Syanate 10.10 3. Five starters. Won by four lengths; and six lengths. Yerick was fourth Sceutum fell. Time 3.455. Mona Nursery:—Sea Mistress 8.10 1; Roadstead 8.2, 2; Dunlora 7.12, 3. There were eight starters. Wen by half a head; and -three-quarters of a length. Burbot was fourth. Time 365. HERBERT POWER STAKES. Second Wind, 9.10 (T. Lewis) 1 Glare, 9.1 (F. Dempsey) 2 Carradale, 9.0 (H. Jones) ... 3 Six started. Won by a short neck; third half a head away. Cimbrian was fourth. Time 2.23. Moonga Handicap Gay Mutineer, 7.13, 1.; First Arrow 7.7, 2; Byron 8.6, 3 Eighteen started. Won by one and a-q-uarter lengths ; third one and a hn'“ lengths away. Salonia was fourth Time 1.263.
Googny Handicap:—Shadow King, :7.13, 1; Sartaress, 7.0, 2; El Ray, 8.2, 3. Fourteen started. Won by two lengths ; and one and a-half lengths ; Taisho fourth. Time 2.195.
Moora Welter, First Division :—Pinnacle, 8.13, 1; Pecunia, 9.3, 2; Gay Salute, 8;1, 3. Thirteen started. Won hy .1$ lengths; and halif a length. Cosy Rug fourth. Time 1.415. Moora Welter, Second Division :- Darpuna 8.9, 1 ; Clarion Call, 9.2, 2; Opera Queen, 8.10, 3. Fourteen started. Won by six lengths; and 23 lengths; Donaee fourth. Time 1.405.
