A PETONE ROBBERY

WELLINGTON, October 13
Motor. accessories to the value of about £lls were stolen from the Pacfiic Service Station at the corner of Jackson and Cuba Streets, Petone, in the early hours of Sunday morning. The proprietor, A. E. Jessop, closed the prenvifies about 11 p.m. on Saturday, and when lie reopened them at 6 a.m. on Sunday lie discovered the theft. The place had been entered through the bach door. The thieves must have had a car to remove the goods, for they included such heavy articles as tyres and batteries.
WAIHI HOTEL DESTROYED. WAIHI, OcTSßer 13'. The Whangamata Hotel was totally destroyed by fire last night. The licensee is Mr W. P. Pennell; and the owner is Mrs Martha Shaw. RESULT OF RECOUNT, WAIPUKUR.AU, October 13. The Waipawa bye-election official count was completed this afternoon. The postal votes were as follows: Mr Jull (United) 71, Mr Tucker (Reform) 73, informal 14. The absentee votes were: Mr Tucker 62, Mr Jull 55, informal 3. The final figui’es are as follows: — Mr Jull (United 3747 Mr Tucker (Reform) 3450 Informal Mr Jull’s majority 297 COURSING HARES LET OUT. AUCKLAND, October 13. The Auckland Coursing Club members on, assembling on Saturday discovered only twelve of thirty hares available for use, the others having escaped through a hole which had been deliberately cut in the light netting fence. The club w.as unable to complete its. programme. The secretary says that if the object of releasing the hares was humanitarian, it was not realised, because the remaining hares had to be coursed twice, and although all reached the home paddock the, first time, this did, not happen the second time. EARTHQUAKE. WESTPORT, October 11. At 12.30 a.m. to-day an earthquake was felt here. The shock was not severe, and no damage was done. The shake was similar to those experienced during the last year. Karamea and Murchison also felt the shake, hut no damage was done in either place.
OBITUARY
WELLINGTON, This Day
Obituary.—Mrs Emma Parker C.M. G,, a well known musician, aged .82 years. Mrs Parker was born at Oxford, England, and came to New Zealand as a child, a.t the death of her father in charge of ltev. Charles Altfß&s'ter. Landing' in Christchurch, she lived there until shortly after her marriage in 1871, when she came to Wellington.

CHILD’S DEATH
TE KUITIj This Day. The death occurred at Te Kuiti hospital of Jack Davey, the three-year-old son of Mr ,C. R. Davey of the hospital staff following on being shot in the head by a pearifle on Septeml) r 12th. The boy was playing with his nine year-old brother at the hospital and, the . latter discovered the rifle, which was kept for .shooting stray cats and pointed the weapon which discharged. PLOUGHMAN’S DEATH. , TE AROHA, This Day. John Elliott Chirney, single, aged 20, was ploughing by tractor at Hungahunga, nine miles from Te Arolia, when the machine overturned crushing his chest and causing instantaneous death. The machine got into soft ground ,agd the deceased was trying to reverse when the accident occurred.
