The prompt action taken by the fire brigade prevented a serious fire in a large block of wooden buildings.in Main Street East at 12.30 o’clock this,morning. The premises were' occupied tn the ground floor by G. Arnold, boot shop, 11. Bridewell, confectioner and pastry cook. The fire apparently started in the bakehouse in,the hack of the upper storey. The principal damage was to fhe bakery, which was gutted. The premises of Arnold was damaged with water and smoke. The stock of Bridewell was also damaged.
