JOCKEY FINED.

James Thomas Humphries, a jockey, was fined £lO for being Intoxicated in charge of a motor. His license was cancelled and lie was prohibited from driving for two years. 1 ■ • •
ESCAPEE SENTENCED
CHRISTCHURCH, October 14.
Edward John Henry, 31, was charged hefoix.' Magistrate Mosley, with attempting to escape from Paparue goal last month. He was sentenced to nine months hard labour, to commence at the expiration of the three years sentence now serving for bigamy. The Police, said Henry broke away from a gang which had been working in a quarry, but was chased by warders and superintendent and recaptured without' difficulty. HOUSE DESTROYED. GISBORNE, October 14. Fire destroyed the s ix roomed house owned and occupied by Hi H. Oalcott of Mangapapa last night. The Occupants had retired for the night and had only sufficient tiine to change into a. few clothes before compelled 'to leave the • burning building. ■ The' house was insured for £BOO in the London Office and the contents for £250 in the South British Office.
THE HAZLETT CASE.
AUCKLAND, October 14.
A telegram stating, Cecil. Hazlett, sheep farmer, of North Taeiri Otago, was in hospital at Rotorua, and unable, to make the journey to Auckland, was produced to Judge Reed to-day. . At the expiry of his bail bond,, counsel in recent proceedings stating he had qslted for leave to appeal to the Privy Council, requested an adjournment of the proceedings, whereon counsel for the manager of Rotorua Inebriates Home where Hazlett was an inmate prior to his release on bail, said he had doubts about the correctness oF extending bail, but expressed a desire to assist, as far as possible.
The' Judge considered the best course was to allow the matter to stand without an adjournment, on the understanding that Hazlett would appear, on his recovery from his illness. He was accordingly required to appear on Oct. 29 tli. • , ■ • <s NEW MOTOR REGULATIONS WELLINGTON, October 14. Hon. W. B. Taverner announces that the regulations relating to motor, drivers have been' prepared. They were thoroughly considered by the conference, which recently sat at the invitation of the Minister of Transport to consider mentis of reducing accidents. Applicants for drivers’ licences will be required to certify to physical fitness or produce a medical certificate of fitness. Provision has been made to overcome the abuse of not obtaining licenses to drive from proper authorities, drivers must undergo a comprehensive driving test and oral examination on the laws and regulations which apply to driving. . This is to be basically uniform in nature throughout the Dominion. Age limits are imposed for various classes of vehicles. The commercial is 21, with a provision that persons already employed under that age shall continue.
