GUNMAN SHOOTINGS

DIAMOND MAY RECOVER. . T~ ACTRESS LURES HIM TO HIS DOOM- ~ (United Prßee Association—By Electru Telegraph—Copyright). NEW YORK, October 12. The wounded gangster, ‘Legs” Diamond, is still given a desperate chance of recovery. He has remained silent, beyond saying that three men entered his room, “I opened the door,” he said, “and the guns blazed away.” He asked the police to inform his wife. The present police version of the attack suggests that the picturesque gangster was lured to the Hotel Montecello by an unidentified woman of the theatrical profession. The crime is similar in many respects to the murdef of the famed gambler Arnold Rothstein, who was a friend of Diamonds, and whose shooting was cabled on November 2nd, 1928. HOTEL PEOPLE IN THE PLOT. NEW YORK, October 12. The Manager of the Hotel, Montlcello, (where Diamond was shot) who was sought by the police, disappeared , during the night, but was later arrested. He has proved to be uncomf municative. It is believed that at least one of Diamond’s assnilments was hidden by the hotel operators. Diamonds shooting is a blow to the ' investigation of scandals connected with the City Court general sessions in which “Legs” Diamond was an important. prospective witness.
