GUNMAN SHOOTINGS
GANGSTER DIAMOND WOUNDED. ALSO SEVERAL OTHERS. (United Press Association—By Electric telegraph—Copy right!. (Received this day at 12.25. p.m.) NEW YORK, October 12. There has been a flurry of local gun shootings. The. climax was one of the most outstanding attacks 'in American criminal history, with the cliseoverey in a mid-town hotel at Monthello, of the notorious racketter, Jack “Legs” Diamond, lying on the floor of a room, with three bullets in his body and one in the head. The hotel clerk discovered him and called the police who rushed the gangster to the Polyclinic Hospital, where he is not expected to live. Diamond for a long time has been seeking to dodge his enemies, whom he. apparently knew were trying to murder him. He went to Europe this summer, but was expelled from Germany as an undesirable, and returned to the United States, where lie was met by the police, but although presumable “wanted,” in several cities he was allowed to go without interference after questioning. “Legs” was seldom brought up on charges, but was suspected in connection with numerous local criminal occurences. He was leader of Brooklyn beer running faction, and reached notoriety a few years ago who, as the bodyguard of the Brooklyn gang leader, “little Angie” Pisano, whom enemies murdered, wounding Diamond at the same time.
Other shootings of less importance occurred when two gangsters were shot at Brooklyn last night, one. being killed.
Four were shot at Kingston, New York. one fntallv. Police Commissioner Mulroone and District Crain hurried to the dying gangster in a room at the hospital and attempted to question him. but lie refused to speak. The police found in an hotel room, bullets from, an automatic pistol, three in the ceiling, one in the floor, and one in a window. The attackers apparently left on other clues.
