The death of one of the very few remaining pioneers of Goldsiborougli occurred on Saturday night Elizabeth Ganfbirazzi passed away at the age of 86 years at her residence. The deceased, who was held in high-, est esteem throughout the fifty-six. years during which she had resided at Goldsiborougli, was a native of County Clare, Ireland, and arrived there in the early seventies, and reared a large family, being survived by five sons and one daughter. A new uniform system of conducting the proficiency examination in the piimary schools will be introduced this year. Instead of the inspectors setting the papers and visiting the scholos as at present, the Education Department will distribute sealed papers throughout New Zealand so that tire examination will be a uniform one. The examination will be held for all candidates in their own schools on November 20 and 24. In the larger schools papers will be marked by; the teachers and then sent to the senior inspector for verification. Marking will not be done by the teachers in the smaller schools.

At a meeting of the District Racing Committee held at Greymouth on Friday, the programmes of, the Westland Reefton and Westport Clubs were approved, the latter .club’s programme subject to the rules of racing being complied with. E. Moran and G. Powell were recommended for trainers’ licenses.

Under ideal weather conditions the Hokitika Tennis Club opened its 1930 season on Saturday afternoon, there being a large number of visitors present from other clubs, who all took part in a combined doubtes tournament which provided entertaining tennis. The final resulted in a win for Turner and Miss Reid after a good exhibition, the runners up being Dr. Hayes and Miss Monk. Afternoon tea supplied by the ladies added to the success of the function.

During the floods last week the Teramakau river at its mouth, encroached considerably on the southern bank, and the four roomed cottage of Mr C. J. Pierson had to be pulled down to save it, causing a. considerable loss to the owner, whose furniture and .effects also suffered damage and loss by the necessary rapid removal from the flood waters. Another cottage owned by Mr E, Roberts was also threatened, but though preparations were made for its removal, this was not necessary, the flood falling in time,

The fi rehells rang out a. vigorous alarm this morning at 1 o’clock, the scene of the outbreak being a small cottage in Hampden. Street at the end of Tancred street owned by Mr Frank Holmes. When the brigade got to work the flames were soon extinguished, but the cottage was, completely ruined. Nothing in the way of reoairs bad since! been effected, and the building had not been occupied since the last fire. There appears everv evidence that the place had been wilfully set on fire, but there is noth* ing to show by whom.
