PHELPS BEATS BARRY. (United Press' Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, October 11. Phelps defeated Barry and won the championship sculling race, convincingly in ideal Putney to Mortlake conditions. There was little public in terest. Barry’s quicker stroke gained him an early two lengths lead, but Phelps drew up with him at Hammersmith bridge, and had six lengths advantage at Barnes bridge! Thereafter he forged ahead and just paddled past the post an easy winner. The time was 22mins 48secs.
