THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
RUNNING ON GOODWILL. Speaking at the recent annual meeting of shareholders in the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-op. Association, the chairman of directorSj Mr C. M. Bowden, said inter alia: “I can now say what it would have been unwise to indicate before, namely, that when I oame into this position I found the business running very largely on goodwill, which had been built up in early years. The premises were only country stores } hut times changed and communication with cities was easier. To counteract the tendency to shop in large centres and actually to retain the business they had it was necessary to reorganise considerably the premises and raise the tone of the organisation.” He thought that they had prospects of improved results, though the coming year was going to be very difficult. They had to face higher taxation, high interest rates, and a great increase in the cost of exchanges and transport.
