RETURN TO PROSPERITY
TAXATION NOT THE AVAY. AUCKLAND, October 6. Sir Joseph Carruthers, ex-Premier of New South AVales, who is a through passenger by the Aorangi, • says Australia will not recover by a. system of taxing the people. “There has never been a case in the history of the world to show that tlie people have been taxed into prosperity,” said Sir Joseph. “You can only get prosperity by leaving the money in the people’s pockets ‘to remain there to fructify,’ as Gladstone said. “Australia, must keep her people in employment. At the present time there are some 200,000 people out of work in New South AVales, and half a million throughout the Commonwealth. This means that the spending power of a big proportion of Australians has vanished , and these workers . are now a burden on the rest of the community. Give the people employment and the spending power is regained, and things will immediately brighten. “AA T ith the high taxation that is at present being imposed employers are forced to put men off. A special tax in New South AA T nles is designed to bring in over; £2,00,000 to assist unemployment, but that very tax is making more unemployment, The Federal Government has imposed a sales tax calculated to net approximately £4,000,. 000, but the Government does not seem to • realise that there will be £4,000,000 less money with which to pay wages,” 1
