In spite of the dirty state of the water, consequent of the flood in-the rivel* tile banks of tile stream were lined With whitebait fishers, but the catch was not of aiiy extent, though here is hopes that, ns the flood goes down there will be an increased run cf the fish. •
The funeral of the late Mrs W. A. Thompson, of Weld Street, took place yesterday afternoon,- and was attended by n large number of friends, there (being a long line of motor cars. The services at All Saints Church and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. H. W. Knights. Many handsome floral tributes were received from sorrowing friends.
'The marriage was celebrated yesterday at ,St. Patrick’s Church, Greymouth, Rev. Father J. Lordan officiating, of Mr Malcolm Houston, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Malcolm Houston, of Hokitika, to Miss Imelda Martini. fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Martini, of Stafford. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a frock of peach embossed georgette. The bridesmaids, Miss Jean Houston, sister of the bridegroom, and Miss Dorothy Martini, sister of the bride, wore frocks of powder blue georgette. ' Mr E. Pfahlert was ‘ best man.
All should be merry and .bright on the Western front to-night when the old time ball will he in progress at. the Soldiers’ Hall, dancing commencing at 8.30 o’clock. There will be a large assemblage present, as visitors from north and south are expected, and the immediate country centres will also supply their quota of' old time votaries. A special programmehas been drafted, and the Black Hand Orchestra will supply the music. - An experienced M.O. will control the dancing which is sure to excite much curiosity with the younger generation, of to-day.
The Hokitika Library Committee met at 7 o’clock last evening. Present; Messrs EVans (Chair) , J. -Niven, 11. M. Coulson, T. W. Duff, W. Wil-‘ /son. An apology was made for the absence Dr Teichelmann. : The Chairman referred to the bereavement suffered by Mr D, Toomey, the Librarian; and stated a letter of condolence bad l>een forwarded. It' was resolved to place on the minutes a motion of sympathy with the bereaved. Mr Toomey wrote thanking, the Committee for the expression of ympathy. Correspondence was read regaiding a new periodical, and iculars of the agreement with the Booksellers Association relative to the charges for new publications. The correspondence was referred to tlie Book Purchase Committee. Accounts were passed for payment as follows August, £l4 13s; September, £2l l-2s lid. The meeting concluded at . 7.30 o'clock. *
