POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association j INVERCARGILL, (kt/ 6. At. a meeting of the Invercargill and sub-office Post and Telegraph , controlling officers, convened for. the purpose of discussing .the proposed Officers’ Guild, the followiug .resolqtiop was unanimously carried: “That the controlling officers of the Southland section of the Post•.,■ and Telegrapn Employees’ Association recoin men c the formation, under Rule 48, of a sub-section, in each district of controlling officers drawing salaries of £320 and upwards per annum to provide fwrtln.T means of representing niattcm affecting themselves, and to encourage greater interest in association matters generally, such sub-sec-tions to have special representation at the Ibiennial , conference. Further, the meeting unanimously affirms., its loyalty, ten the executive of the , assoc-, iation gild adheres, to,.,its pi-gvipus decision- to have nothing, whatever tq do. with the Controlling Officers’ Guild which it considers inimical to a spirit 0? esprit de corps, when co-operation, tolerance and mutual understanding are most essential to the maintenance of an efficient and contented service.”

A thrilling-rewine was effected by a nurse and a porter of- the Waikato Hospital last evening when a‘woman mental 'patient escaped from the institution. ' *:' f ''; "/' ' : GAS EXPLOSION. 1 - j'/ ■ ’ ' TTMARU, October 6. : The prompt action of Constable R. i Alexander in proceeding to' :i fire in a .house at Hunt Street early yestpr!day morning, saved one of the oceu- . parts, ’ Henry ; Ernest Kent; v , frqm..,, almost certain death. Two .firemen re.-, eeived minor injuries ~wheu a door blew out as the result of a gas explosion. Constable Alexander, saw the reflection of the fire while on his beat, arid later heard an'explosion. He informed the brigade and proceeded to the fire. Here he found Mrs Kent in the street, hut her husband had gone back into the house. Constable Alexander dashed in and rescued the 'man, who was in his nigbC attire. He closed the door to keepout .the wind until the brigade aiv rived. Shortly .after., its arrival an, explosion of gas in the house blew out the door,, injuring two firemen,, who had. to receive .medical attention. Considerable damage was done, to the house. •.
