This year the English speaking- world is celebrating, the 150th. apniv-ersary of the of the Sunday school movement by Robert Raikes at Gloucester 1780.,.. ... ; ■ .1 :«>-•*. . His Excellieney, the Governor. General, sent the following message to Mr A. H. Reed of Dunedin: —“Hailing as I do- from Gloucestershire, England, where Robert Raikes, the founder of Sunday schools was born and laboured both for the humane treatment of prisoners and for the spiritual welfare of children, and being myself a profound believer in the efficiency of Sunday schools as a powerful instrument in building up a nation of robust godfearing men and women and loyal devoted patriots, I desire, on the occasion of the 150th.. anniversary of Robert Raikes’ world-wide movement, to express to the Sunday school teachers through this Dominion cordial good wishes for the success of their beneficent and unselfish labours and to their pupils a very earnest hope that the joyful message, which the good book proclaims, may inspire and ennoble all they do in after life.”
