MEETING WITH MATTHEWS
LONDON, September 19
Mr Jack Matthews, who, with the late Mr Eric Hood, crashed in the Burmese jungle on their attempt to fly from England to Australia, met Mrs Hook in London and told her the full story of her husband’s end. Mr Matthews said afterwards that' the ordeal was worse than the torment of the tropical forest. When Mrs Hook arrived ■ the now crippled survivor of the adventure struggled ,to his feet and seized her hands, tears streaming down her cheeks. The widow embraced him said, Jack, old boy, you were splendid. You risked your own safety for him. Tell me everything.?’
Mrs Hook stated afterwards: "I know everything now. I’m starting life all over again. There is much that Matthews told me which the public does not know. My husband’s affairs turned out worse than I ever guessed. A stranger sent me £IOO, which I spent on clothes for the children.- The fund which is being raised will be devoted to the children, who have had a harder time than anybody realises.”
