SYDNEY CELEBRATIONS. NEW ZE A ELAND’S FORWARD MOVE. SYDNEY, Sept. 25. , i With the advent of the new Trade Commissioner for the Dominion (Mr J. Jj. Schmitt), New Zealand, affairs in Australia have been, receiving greater’ prominence than ever. This is particufc; la rly. the ease in Sydney, where Mr .. Schmitt has his headquarters. Although -, lie has been here for only a short time.; he has made himself extremely popular, and his great' enthusiasm for his ‘ j ... country is one bright spot in present-,, day Australian gloom. As a result of the Commissioner’s in-' novation Dominion Day was fittingly •> celebrated in Sydney this "'year. Mr Schmitt, held a reception that was at-, tended by the Lord Mayor and aidermen of the city, by consular representatives of all countries, by members of the State and Federal legislatures, and by business men in every branch of : ~ trade. It was a most distinguishedV gathering, and should do. much to. Tn> crease the status'of the Dominion. All ■ ' the foreign hold receptions on the. Mrs Stanley ijHempton presided; and there was large gathering, mostly of women, who T have settled on this side of the Tasman. Dame Mary Hughes, wife of Mr W. M. Hughes, was one 4 of the. guests of honour. In the.evening the.club held a): dance, and the president, Mrs Hempton was the guest of honour.-She was preseated with a bouquet of “Blackboy” .»• roses by the members of the Associa- A tion. The only decoration in the bait- : room was a banner,-between two New jjj, Zealand flags.||;';Thi|;|)ahnpr bore the Maori word ' ; . “Haereraai” assuring ‘A everyone , a (warm welcome. ;•
' Very' soon the Nbw; Zealand office in A Sydney will be transferred to a promin<hit position in Pitt street, directly 1 ; opposite-the. General''Pbst Office. Al- kj ready, the Widows: are gay with posters •. inviting people to ’plan their holiday > ahead, and to' include New Zealand . in Their plans. Up to now the office has been located; in the seventh floor of a building in Martin place, and has not been easy to finej.', -Now it will const!tute a constant advertisement for the charms of New Zealand. ‘l}.s
