the house. (By Telegraphy—Press Association). WELLINGTON, Oct, 3. The House of Representatives met at 10.30 this morning. The Public Works Statement and Estimates were presented. Conmderation of the estimate . of £2,828,141 for the Post Office account was resumed. Mr M. J. Savage advocated the settlement of salaries and wages in the Department of arbitration and moved that the vote be reduced by £lO as an indication that the House favoured the system. Hon. J. B. Donald said he realised it was a desmibie matter and should he placed beyond Parliamentary control. He would investigate the methods suggested. An amendment was rejected by 39 to 25. -Mr A. Harris moved to ieduce the vote by £9, as a protest against the Government’s failure to give effect to the recommendations of the Petitions Committee in the cases of Mr L. C, Rains and others (Auckland Telegraph Office employees dismissed on charges of divulging information). The Committee expressed the opinion that the punishment of dismissal was unduly harsh. WELLINGTON, October 3. The debate on the amendment of Mr Harris was unfinished when the House adjourned at 1 p.m.
