LINTON MINE
DISPUTE OVER WORKING
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association
INVERCARGILL, October 2
In a statement issued to-day, the management of the Linton Coal Mines states: “In reply to loud protests of tlie President of the Nightcaps Miners’ Union that there i s no ‘go slow’ strike in the mine, the management is fully satisfied that the miners in solid workings, these being the only miners affected by the regulation in question, are ‘going slow.’ The regulation which the company is enforcing in its mine, and to which the miners are opposed, is a regulation made under the provisions of the Coal Mines Act, having for its sole object the safety of the miners themselves. During the pay immediately prior to the strict enforcement of this regulation, the average output of the men affected, was over six tons per shift. It is quite futile to suggest that a drop of this magnitude is due to the enforcement of the regulation.” The statement concludes that the Linton Company was not responsible for the Press Association message of the 29th ultimo from Dunedin with reference to supplies of coal being obtained from Otago mines. It is true that the Company has made arrangements to obtain supplies from Otago, as required. The company is not anxious to ask -its customers to accept Otago coal but it will not hesitate to do so if the necessity arises.
