WELLINGTON, September 30. A special select committee was recently appointed by tlie Government 1 o take evidence and report-on a financial summary of railways under construction. This showed that all seven railways now in hand will produce losses when completed, the aggregate being £727,000 annually. The committee has appointed Mr Hogan, Independent member for Rangitikei, as chairman, but it has been in communication with organisations wishing to give evidence, stating that there is insufficient , time this session to hear witnesses. Several Progress Leagues l ; in the South Island arid a number of individuals in the North Islrand have indicated their intention of presenting eviand a Gisborne delegation was due early next week to advocate the completion of the Napier-Gisborne line, on which the estimated annual loss is £283,000. Probably when the committee reports to the House some announcement regarding a recess investigation will be made by the Acting-Prime Minister.
