A ROUGH EXPERIENCE

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 29. Danger of foundering was experienced by the small coastal steamer To tarn, two miles at sea, after leaving New Plymouth for Greymouth today. I'or about a week, violent weather and unusually high seas have prevailed on the West Coast, and shipping movements have been severely hampered. It was the intention of Captain Eden, of the Totara, to await a moderation of the' weather before sailing, but to-day it was necessary (for the vessel to move to another berth to make room for expected arrivals, and Captain Eden then decided to sail. As soon as the shelter of the harbour was left, mountainous seas were encountered. The steamer stood on her end, and wallowed * dangerously. After battling (for two miles, the Captain decided to return to port, which was accomplished only after the Totara had suffered a severe buffeting.
