A FIRE
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WHAKATANE, Sept’. 29. A fire in the early hours this morning iii Canning’s Buildings gutted two shops. It started in Jaram’s drapery shop and spread to Smallfields stationery shop. The stocks p iij both places were destroyed by fire, smoke and water. . v-ft The brigade was smartly on the scene : >.i; and extinguished the fire in- an araazingly short time, thus saving three ;*< other shops and Smallfields printing & works in the block. ' . : ■ Sf Jarman’s stock was insured in the State Fire Office for £950, less than half the value of the stock. , Smallfield’s stock and plant were insured in the South Britisli and North- :5 * ern Union and Cannings Buildings in the State Fire Office. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
