In the course of Parliament discussion of the Estimates for the Justice Department, Mr W, J. Poison (Stratford) said there was a strong feeling in his district because a Maori, who had been convicted of forgery, had been released to attend a recent tangi. There had apparently been no escort attached to this man. The Minister of Justice (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) said he was sorry the question had been raised. The relatives of Sir Maui Pomare had desired that the man should attend the funeral and he had been accompanied by an escort not in uniform.

A complete human lower jaw-bone' was found on the beach about a mile south of the mouth of the Waimakariri river.by a.fishing party on Friday. The bone was clean and white and the teeth were complete. Two of the side teeth had been coated with gold, and the' two front teeth had gold stoppings. Two of the teeth were badly decayed, but only one was loose. One of the wisdom teeth was sound and another had been filled with amalgam. An assurance that political colour was not involved in appointments of Justices of the Peace was given by the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Justice, in the House replying to suggestions by the Reform benches. The Minister said that justices were recommended by the local member of Parliamended by the. local member of Parliament, and there was no distinction as between the political parties. Provided the nominee had had a reasonable education and was an honest, upright man what his political creed was did not matter one iota. Mr Cobbe said he agreed that in a mining . district where large numbers of men were employed it was very important that working men should be appointed to the Commission of the Peace. Replying to requests that more justices should be appointed, the Minister said that at present there were nearly 6000 members of the commission of the peace in the Dominion. It was not customary to make appointments during a session of Parliament, and it was his intention early in the recess to go into the whole question. Where it could be shown that additional appointments were necessary, particularly in scattered districts, these would be made .
