WATCHMAKER’S DEATH
ENQUIRY OPENED.
AUCKLAND, September 2-3. An inquest as opened to-day into the death of Charley Henry Wallis, iged 25, who was found dead in a flat in the city last night with a gas tube leading from the kitchenette, to the oom in which lie was found. Wallis was a watchmaker, and had been employed recently as a jeweller’s traveller. He left England about nine months ago, and went to Sydney. He irrived in New Zealand only recently, and had been living in flats since August 6th. Deyond these facts little is known about him. So far as is known, lie. had no relatives in New Zealand. When he first took the flat be frequently played the gramophone all day long. When Wallis paid a week’s rent last Friday e.vening that was the last time he was seen until last night. No information about Wallife was jiven at the inquest, which was opened by Mr F. K. Hunt. After evidence had been given by the manager of the fiats, the enquiry was adjourned until Friday. A letter from a girl in Whangarei was found in tire, dead man’s room. She was comimifiipated with, and said that she had met Wallis in Whangarei earlier this year. He had worked in the town for a time. She knew little about hint.
