TARANAKI MURDER CASE.

NEW PLYMOUTH; September 24. Alexander Townsend, charged with the murder of his wife, Cora Alia Townsend, appeared on remand in tin Magistrate’s Court this morning and was 'further remanded till October 7, when it is understood the hearing will be proceeded with.

HAWE-RA, Sept. 26.

After protracted proceedings occupying two whole days, the hearing was concluded late yesterday of tej charges against Donald Alexandei Stewart of theft of £328 sterling as a servant while clerk to the Nornianhy Town Board, and also, twentyfour charges of failing to enter monies received with intent to defraud. Accused was committed for trial at the Supreme Court. Bail of £2OO was allowed.

GREYMOUTH, Sept. 26

An inquest- was held this morning on Samuel Glasson,-,killed, in - Blackball mine bins on Tuesday by being crushed,-between :: prop supporting the bins. A verdict was returned {that death' wfls paused from shock fcaused by"'injuries!'* 'Coroner Meld-rum - added : “The evidence shows the closeness of the props to the line* was a source of danger to those stopping trucks at the bins,' and the biake on the waggon which canned the accident was defective.” I ESCAPEE SENTENCED.

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 26

In the Supreme Court before Judge Adams, Timothy Edward C-osgrove for escaping from prison, was sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard /labour, to be followed -by eighteen months reformative detention, The effect of this will be a sentence of six 'months in addition - to .. the term which Cosgrove is now serving for theft. The Judge said the offence, was serious.

A motor car accident Declined in Wnimana Gorge whereby Alfred Robert Fallows, a traveller for the Goodyear Tyre Co. with headquarters at Hamilton, lost his life. Mr Kirk, a settlei of Wahnana riding-through, the Gorge, noticed the marks' of a car leading over a bank on Douglas .Hill. On investigating h e saw a car submerged in the Waimana river \ forty" feet below and reported it to the .police at Taneatua. The car was recovered from the river this morning and. the body of the victim of the accident was recovered later about three quarters of a mile lower down the river.

EIRE DAMAGE

BLENHEIM, September 26

Smart work by the brigade quelled an outbreak of fire in the business area in Blenheim at an early hour this morning, which occurred in a shop premises in Market street, occupied by J ,T. Ewart, clothier and mercer, and W. Barrett hat manufacturer. Extensive damage was done to the contents of the shop but the hat factory escaped with' practically no damage. The stock of hats, however, in Ewart's shop was badly damaged. The premises are owned by It. herris, and covered by £6OO in the Commercial Union Office. Ewart’s stock was insured for £6SQ, in the Phoenix Office. Cover in the sum of £l5O on fittinfis, and Barrett’s stock and materials were insured for £BOO in the Sun Office.
