Among the road improvements in the district, is the attention being paid by the local body to Slip Hill on Lake Kanieri road. A marked improvement in regard to grade, visibility and widening has been effected of late, and that section of the road is now much safer for traffic which is considerable over the route referred to. The game of tennis steadily increases in popularity and there is a growing demand among players for racket strings 'locally. To meet this demand L. S. Ross has installed a stringing machine which automatically puts even tension on every string and letains the original shape of the frame. The digging machine. secured by the Kanieri Electric Ltd., for the race cutting work at Kanieri Forks, is now in active operation, and has cut already a considerable length of race. The work . accomplished so far, indicates the substantial character of the undertaking. The levelling of the. power site near McKay’s Creek and other, works are also advancing on substantial lilies.

Word has been received 'by. Mrs Tinelti, of Sale. Street, .Hokitika, of the death at Apnea, Italy, of her eldest sister, Mrs Mary Negri. Deceased was the daughter of the late Antonio and Celesta Baretta, of. Throe Mile. She leaves two brothers (John and Frederick, of Kumara), and two sisters, (Mrs Gallop, of Coin den, and Mrs Tinetti, of Hokitika). Deceased was born in Italy and came to New Zealand .when -three, years of .age, and resided on the AVest Coast until about, eighteen years ago, when she returned, to Italy .with her husband, who is still living there.

The Parryphone installed at the .Soldiers' Hall proves to be quite .an acquisition to the hall and a very valuable addition for service to those engaging the building for dances and entertainments. Visitors express delight, and surprise at the excellent, life-like reproduction of music., The instrument, as ip known, is a gift to the Hall by.Mr H. T. Parry, who personally made the speaker and organ setting in which the machine operates. Mr Parry hopes, shortly, to play music for dances broadcasted from Melbourne and Sydney with similar volume and tone. This would be quite a novelty for Hokitika, if nob for the Dominion.

The death took place at Greymouth Hospital yesterday of Mr Jeremiah Toomey, an old resident of Hokitika. Deceased was born in Victoria and was G 7 years of age, coming to New Zealand when a child of four years. He was for many years storeman for Messrs Johnston and Co., ironmongers of Revell Street and later was ship’s- waterman at Greymouth for ten years. He had been in failing health for a considerable time past. He leaves three brothers (Daniel of Hokitika,. Thomas of Canterbury, and Victor of Sydney.) The funeral is taking place at Hokitika cemetery to-morrow morning.

On charges of having misused tickets of admittance to race meetings, the cross-country jockeys, H. Hawkins and D. T. Reynolds, and S. Johnston, a bookmaker’s clerk, were brought before the Victoria Racing Club’s stipendiary stewards on September 10th. The ticket issued to Hawkins, which . was not transfer* rable, was given to an apprentice, who used it to gain admittance to the V.A.T.C Meeting on Saturday, August 2nd. Johnston secured admittance to the Moo nee Valley races on August 27th on a ticket issued to Reynolds. Each was. found guilty, of improper conduct, and Hawkins and Reynolds were suspended from riding in races for three months. Johnston was also suspended for a simil.ar term. In addition, all parties were prohibited from attending race meeting*? during the period of their suspension. .
