POLICEMAN’S BRAVERY REWARDED.

1 LONDON, August 7. In doing so he was himself knocked down by the car and badly injured, causing him to he off duty for several weeks. The Magistrate said that the Duke of York and other eye-witnesses of the incident had borne testimony to the promptitude and bravery of the constable, which undoubtedly prevented a serious accident and might have saved the child’s life. The public expected much from officers of the Metropolitan Police, and incidents such as these showed that the confidence they felt in the police was not misplaced. A cheque for £ls was also presented by the Magistrate to Police Constable Alfred Jajnes Butler, 515 L, in recognition of his pluck in jumping into the Thames from the Albert Embankment at midnight on May 24 and rescuing ;• woman from drowning. The woman, who struggled violently in the water, shouted that she had murdered someone, and inquiries, it was stator, proved that she had, in fact, killed a man.
