Mr Brennan addressing the Sixth Committee said the Australian Administration would never countenance a motion of annexion or a claim to sovereignty over New Guinea. It desires to removed the last vestage of unfavourable discriminatioen, inconsistent with her own immigration laws. He thought it most desirable to state this-position clearly, because the observations of individual critics suggest the situation is not universally appreciated. Sir T. Wiliford said all New Zealand parties were determined faithfully to carry out the Samoan mandate in the interest of the population. He thanked the mandates commission for congratulation on what had been done for education, health and improved economic conditions of the people of Samoa. He believed if the League continued to have confidence in New Zealand, Samoa would become the brightest jewel among the mandate territories. Difficulties including passive resistance of portion of the inhabitants should be borne in mind, when considering the Commission’s reference that it was widely different from New Zealand.
