STUART CUP DEBATE

. ’***> ——— GUP GOES TO ST. COLUMRA. Last evening at St. Mary’s Club Rooms the Stuart Gup Debate took place between teams representative of St. Mary’s and St. Columba Clubs: As on the previous occasion this year St. Columba were successful and therefore hold, the cup for. the season. There was a good audience and the debaters were given a very attentive hearing. Prior to the contest Mr J. Lynch, president of St. Mary’s extended a welcome to the visitors and wished the competing teams success. Mr W. J. Jeffries acted as judge and fulfilled his duties most capably. The debate set down was:—“The Present System of Education does not Educate,” St. Columba taking the affirmative and St. Mary’s the negative. The judge in giving his decision expressed his appreciation of the honor confirmed on him in being selected to judge the contest. He congratulated both teams on their performances. Their matter was excellent and the delivery was very good. He congratulated St. Columba .on their . success and hoped many more pleasant debates would eventuate. Mr Jeffries wished to congratulate by Mr C. O’Neill of St. Columba Club for bis very fine effort which he considered was the best of the evening.

There then followed many congratulatory speeches. Rev. Father McKay extended his congratulations to St. Columba. They, deserved their well earned win, and he hoped when the contest was resumed next year St f Alary’s would give tlieVn a good run for the cup. The Rev. speaker thanked Mr Jeffries for his able judging and said he felt sure that the debaters would benefit by his helpful remarks.

A short- musical programme 'then followed, the following competing: Misses U. Groufsky, J. Warren and M. Hanrahan, and recitations by Messrs J. Stopforth and Tj. ’Phillips. Miss M. Knowles acted as aeeompanis.te. At the conclusion of the programme Mr Jeffries move a vote of thanks to the Chairman, Rev. Father McKay, and congratulated him on his work in connection with St. Mary’s Debating Club.

A dainty supper was served by St. Mary’s Ladies Club and at its conclusion a dance was held.
