ARMED HOLD-UP

SYDNEY, Sept. 21
There were two armed .hold-ups last night. Ernest 1 Urssell, a garage employee, was compelled to hand over twenty pounds to a couple of footpads, who menaced him with a revolver at Waterloo.
At Paddington, John Harris was waylaid by a man who searched his pockets,, and stole five shillings.

Speaking at Condobolin, Hon. Mr Blakeley, Fed.eral Minister for Home Affairs, denied that Sir Otto Niemeyer had come to Australia at the invitation of the . Commonwealth.. Government. The fact was that the. Bank of England had suggested to the Federal Government they should send a representative here, with a view to taking over the overdraft of the Odinmonwealth Bank and of the Westminister Bank of -London, a t’?
Mr Blakeley' added that Labour had not, and would not, endorse Sir Otto Niemeyer’s proposals to reduce the standard of living in Australia lo that of England with its two millions of unemployed. ' -ki Mr Beasley, the Assistant Federal Minister of Industries, made a similar declaration at Queanbeyan, Mr Beasley added that the financial interests abroad do not desire that the secondary industries in Australia should be developed. They desired that Australia should remain merely ,a Crown colony, producing raw materials for manufacturers abroad. Labour, he said, was certainly not going to alloy that. '• , ■ "
THEFT OF AEROPLANE.
SYDNEY, September 20
A young aviator whose identity is undisclosed‘gained notoriety to-day and also narrowly escaped death. He stole an aeroplane from Hargrave Park aerodrome intending to be first to land an aeroplane at Katoomba. However, he crashed at Granville suburb and severely damaged the machine, but he escaped injury. ' , , 1 ' • . A young passenger accompanied'the pilot when the machine crashed at Woyrader. He calmly arranged for the transport of the wrecked plane to Mascot aerodrome. He assisted to dismantle the moth and secured a lorry and rode, as far as St. . Peters : suburp near Mascot with it. The bogus pilot then gave the driver a note and tola him the Mascot authorities would pay and left the lorry. ‘ Later the man was arrested at. Brisbane. : .-
LATE SIR NEVILLE HOWSE.
MELBOURNE, Sept. 22.
Cabinet Ministers, .and the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives expressed deepest regret at the death of • Sir Neville Howse, who was held in the highest esteem by all parties, as well as returned soldiers, with whom He come in cl'*se touch while he was in charge of repatriation. , ' The Government Has cabled a message of condolence to Lady Howse and family.
