Visiting Reefton school pupils departed north to-day after a very enjoyable stay in Hokitika. Time here was fully occupied. Yesterday morning there was an enjoyable motor trip and last night a very jolly social. In the basket and football matches the visitors were defeated. At a meeting of the Reef ton Jockey Club on Wednesday evening the programme Committee, submitted to the meeting the programme for the Midsummer Meeting with stakes totalling £1650. The events include a Hack (race each day, but no Hurdle event. A notice in reference to claims against the estate of the late 'Hawthorn Hugh Adamson, o.f Harihari, requests they he sent in to Mr A. R. El cock, solicitor, before 10th October, and all debts owing must be paid or arranged for before the said date. The visitors were at both Waiho Gorge and Welieka, visiting the glaciers and enjoying ali the sights to be reached' by the various tourist tracks, The party returned here yesterday afternoon and left for Christchurch this morning]. Ml* J. O’Brien, M.P., lias received a letter, from the Mon. Harry Atm ore. Minister of Education, to the effect that his representations in regard to the conveyance of the children from South Spit to Hokitika is being enquired into. When full information is forwarded to the Minister he will fully reoly. He points out, however, that under the regulations only those children over ten years of age whose, homes are over three miles from the nearest school can bo conveyed free of charge or receive conveyance allowance.

The “Welcome, Ball” organised by the Black Hand Society to be held in the R.S.A. Hall next Wednesday, should be one of the brightest dances of the year. Having joined forces with the local Hockey Club the Ashburton team of ladies who play in Hokitika on Wednesday afternoon will be guests at fhe ball, as a'so the local girls who put up such a creditabe performance at the Hockey Championships in Invercargill. It’s going to. be, a real sports dance, and the sporting price of 2s 6d admission should be within the reach of all. The Black Hand Orchestra of eight instruments will supply bright “Cheerio” music with plenty of pep. Boys “Be there.”—Advt.

The Lake Kanieri hatchery is now well stocked with ova—both Brown ti’Out and Rainbow trout. The former waS received from Christchurch and Dunedin, and the latter : from Rotorua, lit all some half a milllou' ova has been put down this tension. The first 'fry available was sent to Grey mouth, for liberation in the Grey Society’s district, The second will be liberated in Westland district, as the product of the ova is equally divided between the two Societies. The hatchery iis in charge of Mr S. W. Ridland who has been very successful over a number of years with the hatchery work, which calls lor Mery .painstaking attention and an intimate knowledge of the duties. The hatchery is a point of interest just now for visitors to the lake-side. The handling of half a million ova and the resultant fry entails considerable work for the Hatchery Committee, of which Mr A. C. Armstrong is Chairman, as that Committee is responsible for the transport arrangements ensuring quick delivery on arrival or departure.
