IMMIGRATION

CANADIAN R INFLATIONS-.

(Unit«d Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—CopyrigLt).

(Received 10.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 17.

Inquiries at Ottawa elected the information Unit no new restrictions on white immigration has been imposed. The only restrictions applying are in respect to the amount of money in the possession of immigrants and contract labour.

One to current depression and extensive unemployment with the coming autumn and winter, tin* Immigration authorities are more closely applying these qualifications than at other times. The contract labour regulations is of years standing and prohibits the entry into Canada of immigrants under labour contracts except in cases where the Minister of Immigration decided that their presence is required. The Immigration Department at Ottawa moreover denied the reports from Vancouver that some two hundred Australians were seeking entry into Canada and are being held up and some of them are in danger of being sent back. Officials state that only one or two Australians were detained. The restrictions on immigration into the United States is of a similar nature. It was also announced at Washington a few days ago by State Departments that due to unemployment in the United States, Consuls abroad have been instructed to examine applicants for visas more closely for the purpose of limiting the number of entries under the provision of law, which enables exclusion when there is a danger of an applicant becoming a “public charge.” Ordinary travellers are in no way affected, either in Canada or the United States.
