An unusual accident happened on the sout]i road in the Cooks river district on Sunday during the height of the wind storm. When driving along the south road a Public Works car was struck by a falling tree, wrecking the front part of the car. Mr Rountree, who was driving,' had a very narrow escape. He was struck by parts of the car and bruised, but fortunately escaped serious injury. At the Magistrate’s Court tins morning before .Messrs Jeffries and Benjamin, justices, John James charged with being a vagrant was convicted and ordered to leave the town forthwith. On Tuesday another new arrival in the district was similarly dealtli with by justices.

A clause in the “Washing Up” Bill adds certain land, amounting to about 17 acres, and comprising small subdivisions of Arthur’s Pass township to the Arthur’s Pass National Dark and confers on the Controlling. The District Engineer, Air Johnston, who was in the district yesterday, paid a visit of inspection to the Hokiika river erosion below the- Gorge. A pro* posal has been made for substantial work at a cost of over two thousand pounds, the settlers to associate them, selves as a River Beard and make a subsidy contribution,, but the settlers have net moved definitely in the matter, and protection is in obeyance, with the settlement still threatened by the erasing river. Air Johnson looked into an alternative or rather lesser scheme for protection, and is reporting to Head Office. A round of the County roads c-f the district was made also, yesterday forenoon, and all. the roads passed over, were found in good order for the district traffic. The state of Kokatahi bridge is beginning to give concern and some special repairs will shortly have to be taken in hand As the bridge is on the secondary highway the funds will be provided mainly from the highway subsidy.

Air T, A. Johnston, District Engineer, who was in Soutli AVestland over the week-end, returned north yesday. ATr Johnston inspected public works as far south as Cooks River, (south side). The road construction work is proceeding steadily, and clear of the rivers, the going is good. It will be possible to .build first class roads for motor vehicles, The bridging of the Fox river.just past the Wehoka hostel, is going to be fairly costly, The plans are now being finalised and. It is hoping a start will be- possible shortly. It will be a suspension bridge springing from .concrete abutments, - A somewhat similar bridge will be rer quired at Cooks river, Nearby a foot* bridge, wire suspension, has been provided for access to the Fo-x Glacier and the camping hut is to be removed to a better position. The Clearwater bridge on the main road near the hostel is well advanced. Other works along the main road are being pushed on. The bridges on the AVaiho section will soon be out of hand, after which two- open crossings north of Waitangi are to be bridged, and a temporary bridge erected at the open crossing near Tet-aho. Road surfacing is having special attention and much work is being done in fencing had corners and dangerous hill sides. Maintenance generally is being well maintained throughout.
