DISPOSAL OF MONEY. SOCIETY’S .DECISIONS. ' By Telegraph Per Press Asm* WELLINGTON, September 17. The Executive, of. the New Zealand Obstetrical Society held its hait-yeai-ly meeting to-day. It was decided to hand over the sum ol £6OOO being tnc surplus of the endowment, over ana above the £25,000 required for endowing a Chair ol Obstetrics to the Otago University Council as a trust 1 unci to be used for the benefit of obstetrical education in the Dominion, per medium of travelling scholarships of obstetrics and diseases of women for New Zealand graduates of medicine, and also for the endowment of research work in obstetrical matters in the .Dominion. The society’s solicitors advised that it was quite ill order lor the surplus to be used tor the purpose. ; The administration of the £6OOO trust will he governed by a board consisting <?1 representatives of Otago University tlie Medical School and the Obstetrical Society. Tlie society considers that the greatest benefit to the Dominion will result if, for the next fifteen years, all revenue from this ■£6ooo is devoted entirely to travelling : scholarship purposes, but in order to make provision for tlie distant future, it has included, the word “research” in the title of tlio trust.
Later in the day, ten members ol the Executive from all parts of New Zealand waited on Hon. Mr Atmore, .Minister of Education, requesting tiiat in the matter of the subsidy on. the £‘>.~,ooo handed over to'the University authorities on AI ay 21 for the purpose of endowing a Chair of Obstetrics, the money should he made available immediiiiely. The deputation pointed out that the university authorities had ail arrangements made for advertising in Great Britain for applications for the Now Zealand position, but until the subsidy was available, they did not feel justified in proceeding further.
The Minister assured the deputation of ’-fig desire to assist the Council tn the appointment, He said the Cabinet had decided this week that it would pay to the Otago University Council the interest on the amount of subsidy due until the full subsidy was available, thus making it possible for the University authorities to take tlie necessary steps. The applications for the chair have to he in the High, Commissioner's office at London in January. .
