HEAVY LOSS OF LAMBS

EFFECT OF RECENT STORM

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 16

The snow which fell in the Waiau district ;ln*st week is melting slowly, and the inland road to Kaikoura is now open and safe for traffic*. The rivers are normal on that route. The Waiau-Par missus Road has proved treacherous during the past- week owing to the amount of water in the Stanton, and several cars had to be towed out. There is still a failamount of water and traveller,s would do well to avoid this road till the waters recede. The past storms have been disastrous to flocks owners on the flat, where lambing is general, and heavy losses are reported. Losses of up to 300 have been reported by some of the larger owners. Nearly all the lambs born during, tlie storm were lost.
