MORE ART UNIONS

REQUEST FOR GOVERNMENT

PERMITS,

[By Telegraph, Per Press Association.]

WELLINGTON, September 16.

A deputation, representing the business men and sports bodies in tlie community, waited on Mr Ransom, and advanced reasons for a continuance of art. unions.

Replying, Mr Ransom said lie did not propose to express any opinion in regard to the morals of art unions Tlie question whether -the Government was justified or not in continuing the issue of permits had given the Government much concern, and he was ghul to know the opinion of various sections of the community. It was true that there had been abuse in the past. There was one notorious case in which £25,000 was collected and £25,000 was spent, so that tlie organisation in whose benefit it was arranged received nothing. TThe present Government was endeavouring to keen a check on all art unions, with the object of seeing that at least 50 per cent of the proceeds went to tlie right quarter. It was necessar;. too, that the Government should take into full consideration the objects ol an art union.

Mr Ransom promised to-place the representations of the deputation before the Government.
