FORGERY CHARGE

fßy Telegraph, Per Press Association.] WESTPORT, September 15. At the local court, Leo Reginald Dennis was committed for trial on a charge of forgery, by Messrs G. M. Powell and A. Marshall, J’s.P. The charge was that lie forged a receipt for a money order telegram purporting to be signed by A .E. Fihnigan. He was also charged . with forging other documents in connection with the same money order telegram. Mr W. J. Joyce appeared for accused and Detective H. Murch represented the Police. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, and reserved his defence, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial; 7 * LADY POMARE LOSES CASE., WELLINGTON, September 15. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr Barton, S.M., gave judgment in the case in which Lady Mina Pomafe claimed £159 10s 3d damages from R. L. Swanson, (farmer, of Whiteman’s Valley), as the result of a. motor collision i Defendant counter-claimed for £lO 14s 6d and costs of the action.

Arter hearing evidence, the Magistrate gave judgment for defendant, holding that plaintiff had been negligent.

It was decided at a meeting of the Council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce to-night to enter an emphatic protest against the proposal of the Banks to increase their charge for keeping their customers’ accounts. The resolution was carried by a majority. 1 ; . . SUPPER’S APPLICATION. ; . REFUSED BY APPEAL COURT. WELLINGTON, September 16. Without coming to any definite conclusion as to its power to'grant such leave .to appeal, although it considered it did not have that power, the Court of Appeal yesterday dismissed the application of Thomas Benjamin Slipper, (barrister and solicitor of Apia Samoa) for leave to appeal to the Privy Coun-.' oil, holding that the case was considered not of sufficient general or public importance. MAN FINED. WANGANUI, .Sept. 16. Francis Halligan, who only recently came out of goal, pleaded guilty to trespassing on the Wanganui racecourse. It was stated that he came to Wanganui to 'try to get work. He thought he would try his luck and hacked Monoloff and won £23 12s Gd. “Then,” remarked Detective Walsh, “he has plenty of money to pay a substantial fine.”

“Don’t make it too heavy,’’ remarked the accused, “or 1 will be destitute.”

.Magistrate Salmon then fined him £lO, in default two months.

WOMAN’S DEATH

ASHBURTON, Sept. 16,

Mary Ann Ward, aged 71, wife of Tom Ward, was found dead in a water race at the rear of her home at Cliertsev this morning. She apparently tripped and fell into the water. MAN’S DEATH. RESULT OF MOTOR ACCIDENT. HAWERA, September 16. Resultant on the capsize of a car near Waverley yesterday morning, William S. Moore a newspaper reporter residing at Hawera, was hospitalled at Patea and died this morning from a fracture of the base of the skull. Proceeding with his father W. H. Moore to visit his home at Blenheim, deceased was travelling by car to Wellington with Jack Jones, the well known boxer, when the vehicle overturned. Moore senr was hospitalled with head and back injuries and Jones escaped injury.

FIRE IN THEATRE. GISBORNE, September 16.

A fire in the operating bos of the -Majestic Theatre this morning was prevented from spreading by the presence of mind of the operator, who was partly overcome by fumes. He was burned about the hands. A quantity of films was destroyed but no damage was done to the theatre.
